Started in 26th June 2000, the band called Govt. Mizo High School NCC Pipe Band initially have 60 students from NCC Cadets, the band started its first public appearance in Mizoram School Games Opening and Closing functions in 2000. The next appearance happened in 2001 in Republic Day Parade at Assam Rifles Playground. Since these appearance the band have participated in various Mizoram Goverment ‘s Official Functions like Republic Day Parade, Independence Day Parade and other inaugural programmes.

A Little About Pipe Band

Since 2007, the band used to participate in DGNCC RD Camp every year and participate in Prime Minister’s Rally except in 2018 and 2020 RD Camp.The band comprises 44 Cadets where 14 JW, 14JD, 4SW and 12 SD where there are 24 pipers,12 side drummers, 4 tenor drummers, 2 bass drummers and 2 majors. They can play many patriotic English songs, Hindi songs and Mizo songs. During RD Camp due to limited time they will play only-Tawpna ni (Mizo), Luipui(Mizo), Chhal Sepoy(Hindi), Lalvunga(Mizo Classic), Strash Peey (English), and Reel(English),Valley of the Green(English), Bring O’ Don (English) and Lungduh(Mizo) and march off song is Kan Zo Tlang Ram Nuam(Mizo).

More about Pipe Band

The school band did well in many competitions over the years.

On January 14, 2005, they performed two times in front of the Indian President, Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam, when he visited Mizoram.

In 2009, because of their excellent performance, Brigadier PR Sharma, Deputy Director General (NER) NCC, offered a valuable trophy to the Head of the Institution.

In 2013, during the DGNCC Republic Day Camp, they received compliments from Additional Director General (B) NCC, Major General Rajiv Verma, for their outstanding performance. In the same year, the band major H. Lalnunmawia also received a DGNCC Recommendation Card for their performance.

In 2017, the band won the 1st prize in the Zonal (North East Zone) Band Competition in the Girls Category in Gauhati. They also achieved the 3rd position in the National Inter School Band Competition organized by the Department of School Education and Literacy, Ministry of Human Resource Development, New Delhi, held on January 14, 2018.

Again, on December 5, 2018, the band secured the 1st prize in the North East Zonal Band Competition in Gauhati and participated in the National Inter School Band Competition held in Delhi, where they won the 3rd prize on December 21, 2018.

Once more, on January 15, 2020, the band won the 2nd prize in both boys and girls categories in the Zonal School Band Competition held in Gauhati.

Several band members, after completing their school tenure, joined the Indian Army, Indian Navy, and became instructors in SSA Band parties in various districts in Mizoram. In 2020, three of our band members who participated in RDC 2019 joined the Indian Army.

In December 2022, the Pipe Band won the First Prize in both categories, boys and girls, in the Mizoram State School Band Competition. The girls’ party was selected for the National Inter School Band Competition in New Delhi, held in January 2023, organized by the Ministry of Defence and Ministry of Human Resource Development. There, the Girls Band Party won the Second Prize among all India School Band parties.
